3 Tips to Cultivate Workplace Unity in Politically Divisive Times

As leaders, we need to cultivate a workplace that functions as a supportive micro-society—one where people intentionally strive to get along, collaborate effectively, and actively contribute to each other’s ability to work with purpose and joy. Our individual and collective success depends on it. Easier said than done in these times, right?  Let's discuss some practical tips:

1. Lead with curiosity and respect instead of avoiding hard conversations. We don’t need to police or avoid political discussions. As leaders, we can model what it looks like to engage in conversations where curiosity and respect are the goals—not necessarily agreement.

  • Example: “I can tell this means a lot to you, tell me more about why you are so passionate about this."
  • This makes the conversation more about understanding the other person instead of debating issues. (and doesn't require agreement)

2. Lean into your company values and celebrate the wins. Your company’s values define the standards you uphold, the characteristics that shape who you are, and the reasons behind what you do. Use this time to inspire your team by reminding them of these values in a positive and uplifting way, rather than as a correction.

  • Example: “One of our company values is collaboration, which thrives on diverse opinions. This week has challenged us to work together despite differing perspectives, and I want to encourage you to continue striving for that. Staying true to who we say we are requires this effort. I also want to thank you because I’ve already seen collaboration beautifully demonstrated in several conversations this week."

3. Protect psychological safety. As leaders, it’s crucial to protect psychological safety in politically divisive times to foster open communication, keep our teams united, reduce unnecessary conflict, lead with inclusivity, and build trust—creating a supportive, productive environment for everyone.

  • Example: In your 1:1s ask- "Is there anything challenging for you this week?” For more tips on how to continue this conversation, check out this podcast episode!

In these times of political tension, it’s essential to remember that as leaders, we set the tone for how our teams communicate, collaborate, and care for one another. Leading with curiosity, leaning into values, and protecting psychological safety will help cultivate a unified, thriving workplace, no matter the external challenges.
